Tears, congratulations as Atlantis lands, shuttle program ends

Soaring across the predawn haze, the space shuttle Atlantis glided back to Earth early Thursday -- capping a 30-year program that saw hundreds of astronauts go into space.
The landing at 5:57 a.m. ET went off without a hitch at Florida's Kennedy Space Center.
But it marked a sentimental finish for the four astronauts, who woke up to "God Bless America" on their final morning in space.
"This one was dedicated to all the men and women who have worked for the space shuttle program in the past three decades," NASA said.
"I saw grown men and grown women crying today," said Mike Leinbach, space shuttle launch director. "Tears of joy, to be sure ... human emotions came out on the runway today. You couldn't suppress them."

Mission commander Chris Ferguson said he and the other three astronauts "were honored to be a part of this. But ultimately, it's everyone who has worked on the shuttle program -- although we got to take the ride, we sure hope that everybody who has ever worked or touched or looked at or envied or admired a space shuttle was able to take just a little part of the journey with us."
Soon after it landed, Ferguson said the program ends on a hopeful note.
"The space shuttle changed the way we view the world, the way we view the universe," he told NASA mission controllers. "America's not going to stop exploring. Thanks for protecting us and bringing this program to a fitting end."
After Houston Mission Control signed off, ceding control to Kennedy Space Center, the mission control space filled with more than 100 people for an emotional outpouring. Flowers appeared, and a cake in the shape of Atlantis was rolled in. A box of cigars -- which weren't lit inside the building -- was passed around by mission control workers.
"It's been my extreme pleasure and honor to work with each one of you, and to have been part of this outstanding team of individuals so dedicated and passionate about the work they do," Tony Ceccacci, entry flight director, told the mission control team. "... You are the main reason for the success of the shuttle program."
He told the team, "Your work here has made America and the world a better place."
The 13-day mission to the International Space Station was to stock the orbiting laboratory with supplies, food and equipment. The crew of four delivered more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, equipment and other supplies, NASA said. Atlantis lifted off July 8.
In addition to Ferguson, the crew was also made up of pilot Doug Hurley, and mission specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim.
"We're going to put Atlantis in a museum now, along with the three orbiters, for generations that will come after us to admire and appreciate," Ferguson said. "And hopefully, I want that picture of a young 6-year-old boy looking up at a space shuttle in a museum and saying, 'Daddy, I want to do something like that when I grow up,' or 'I want our country to do fantastic things like this for the continued future.'
"And if we set those steps right now, and they continue with that next generation of space explorers, then I consider our job there complete," he said.
Atlantis' landing means the United States has no way to lift humans into space for the first time in decades, leaving Russia as the only option to ferry American astronauts to orbit.
The first shuttle, Columbia, blasted off on STS-1 April 12, 1981. Since then, space shuttle crews have fixed satellites, performed scientific studies, and ferried materials and people to International Space Station Alpha, a football field-sized construction project in orbit. The shuttle program has sent 355 people from 16 countries to space, with five space shuttles on a total of 135 missions.
"I recognize that change is very hard," Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for space operations at NASA, told reporters. "But huge growth, or huge improvement, really comes from change."
NASA can no longer afford to continue the shuttle program and simultaneously work on future projects, said Bob Cabana, director of the Kennedy Space Center.
Asked when astronauts might lift off from Kennedy Space Center again, Gerstenmaier said it could be mid-2015 or 2016.
Ceccacci -- who joined NASA the year before STS-1, told CNN the program's ending hasn't quite hit him yet.
"I'm sure next week, you know -- usually when one mission gets done, we're getting ready to work on the next one. And (to) go back to the office and there's not a next one to work on, that's going to hit a little hard." he said. "... It's been emotional the whole week."
In his 31 years, he said, there has never been a day when he's gotten up and said, "I don't want to go to work."
Ceccacci said he is one of the lucky ones -- he still has a job at NASA. He said officials need to come up with a long-range plan for America's space program and hopefully lure back the employees who will now enter the private sector and "make some real money." Of all the expertise in the shuttle program, he said, 80 to 90% is "going out the door." (cnn)

Storms Hit Kentucky Derby Track; Horses, Humans OK

Storms Hit Kentucky Derby Track; Horses,
Humans OK Possible tornado damages barns,
chapel at Churchill Downs; no
injuries to horses, humans
The famed Churchill Downs horse race
track, longtime home to the Kentucky
Derby, was hit by a possible tornado
Wednesday, knocking down parts of
barns and chasing out horses that ran
loose before being corralled.
Hours after the storm hit, officials had no reports of injuries to
humans or horses at the track south of downtown. Elsewhere in the
city, high water from torrential rains briefly trapped a couple of
people in their cars, a mayor's spokesman said, and a hospital
reported that it treated two patients hit by falling trees.
The National Weather Service said radar tracked a confirmed
tornado near the track and the University of Louisville campus
about 8:10 p.m. Though no races are run on Wednesdays, a
simulcast of races elsewhere was being shown at the track, and a
Texas Hold 'em poker tournament was being held, officials said.
At least nine of the track's 48 backside barns were damaged, as
was the chapel. The barn damage, displacing about 200 horses,
was in an area of the track where workers live in apartments above
barns. One barn was flooded by a water main break.
"It's a hell of a mess back here," track spokesman John Asher said
of the barn area where the damage was concentrated.
Louisville fire Capt. Salvador Melendez said safe areas were found
for the horses overnight at the track. The nearby state fairgrounds
along with Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington offered stall space if
needed, Asher said.
The iconic twin spires above the clubhouse overlooking the finish
line were apparently not damaged, said track President Kevin
Flanery.
"Clearly we've got several barns with significant damage and we're
just trying to make sure people and the animals are safe first,"
Flanery said.
Security guards told reporters that some horses had gotten loose
for a time but were later caught. At least 1,300 horses were
stabled at Churchill, said vice president of racing Donnie
Richardson.
Several people taking part in the poker tournament said they saw
the rotation in the clouds and then saw swirling winds touch down
along the backstretch and skip diagonally through the barn area,
Asher said.
"Clearly in their eyes it was a tornado." Asher said. A National
Weather Service team will determine whether a tornado or straight
line winds did the damage.
Trainer William "Jinks" Fires had to find new living quarters for 24
horses in a barn that had part of its roof torn off. Water was knee-
high in the barn after pipes broke.
"I was home in my pajamas," he said. "But it didn't take me long
to get here."
Other trainers offered empty stall space for the horses he trains.
"Anyone who had an empty stall, we put 'em in," Fires said.
The Kentucky Derby, the first leg of horseracing's Triple Crown, has
been run for 136 years at the track. It has a capacity to handle a
crowd of some 160,000-plus for the annual spring tradition known
as much for its mint juleps and fancy hats as the racing.
The track, owned by Churchill Downs Inc., underwent extensive
renovations in 2002 and 2003 totaling more than $200 million.
Thursday's racing card was canceled because of the damage. The
track has nine live racing days left in its spring meet that runs until
July 4.
In August 2009, a flash flood heavily damaged the Kentucky Derby
Museum, situated just off Gate 1 at Churchill Downs. The museum
was closed for nine months while it underwent a $5.5 million
renovation.
No damage has been reported at the university, which is sparsely
populated at this time of year, said John Drees, a university
spokesman. Scattered reports of damage to buildings in the
Louisville metro area were reported from the storms that
continued to move through into the night. The worst damage
appeared to be in the Churchill Downs area, though, said Chris
Poynter, a spokesman for Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.
Eyewitnesses said they saw about a dozen power poles downed
near the track and university. Some 2,600 customers were without
power around the Louisville area at about midnight.
Storm sirens wailed in Kentucky's largest city as multiple tornado
warnings were issued as the storm went through.
"It looks like we dodged what could have been a really bad ...
evening," Poynter said.

Missouri to release list of tornado missing

Missouri to release list of
tornado missing

The US state of Missouri is to release a
list of people missing since a devastating
tornado struck the city of Joplin on
Sunday.
As many as 1,500 people remain
unaccounted for, but officials hope many of
those are will be found alive.
The tornado killed at least 125 people,
injured 750 and wrecked as much as a third
of the city, making it one of the most
destructive in US history.
US President Barack Obama plans to visit
Joplin on Sunday.
Search teams in the city of 49,000 have
scoured the wreckage for survivors. But by
Thursday morning, authorities began
weighing when to begin using bulldozers and
other heavy kit to clear debris - a step that
would indicate no more survivors were
expected to be found.
Joplin Fire Chief Mitch Randles was quoted
by the Associated Press as saying: "We've
had stories from earthquakes and tsunamis
and other disasters of people being found
two or three weeks later, and we are
hopeful we'll have a story like that to tell."
Those leading the search effort say it is
impossible to know how many people are
truly missing, since many may have simply
left the area and not been in contact with
relatives.
Mike Hare said his 16-year-old son Lantz
was among the missing. Mr Hare told AP he
had searched the neighbourhood where the
boy was last seen and had called hospitals
as far away as Dallas and Kansas City.
Lantz Hare had been driving with a friend
when the tornado struck on Sunday evening.
The tornado destroyed the car, and Mr Hare
found Lantz's backpack in the wreckage.
"We know he's hurt somewhere," Mr Hare
said on Wednesday. "We just can't sit and
keep calling. You've got to be moving."
